We shape our buildings; thereafter, they shape us.
— Winston Churchill

Florals Workshop: BASICS with Lily Peterson

Heaven & the Academy forbid carnations from the supermarket!  We have a better solution.  Flowershop, located at Mixson in North Charleston, is the Academy’s go-to local florist for earthy, organic arrangements that feel everything but store-bought.  We called in owner Lily Peterson to conduct a three-course series at the Academy that will empower students to forage and design their own florals starting with the Basics, on to Centerpieces (W 11/18), and finally with Wreaths and WINE (W 12/9) just in time for the holidays.  Leave each of these classes with an arrangement in a classic glass vessel you will want to refill again and again.

Workshop at 10AM with Tea & Toasts by the Dean.

Purchase tickets HERE.  $125 (Prices/times vary slightly for other classes in this series.)

Intro. to Italian: PASTA 102 with Chef Jason Stanhope

Jason Stanhope, JBFA-winning Executive Chef of (our very favorite) FIG, returns to the Academy kitchen to teach another intimate class on the basics of making & cooking fresh pasta at home.  Join him in the garden afterwards for an al fresco Mediterranean feast, accompanied by the choice wine selections of Femi Oyediran, Advanced Sommelier at Charleston Grill, plus Antipasti by the Dean.  Pasta 101 on 10/18 features flat and stuffed pasta, and Pasta 102 focuses on texture in rolled pastas and dumplings...maybe even some of those famous "pillows of love."

Lesson at 3PM, followed by Supper at 5:30PM.

Purchase tickets HERE.  $275/class or $500/set of two.

Charleston Library Society Lunch + Talk | Charleston, SC

Nestled deep in our very own city is a tiny Academy that teaches classes in the most important subject in the world: the domestic arts. The Academy’s unique curriculum includes everything from cocktail-party etiquette to business entertaining, dealing with household guests and cooking for the holidays.

Founded by Suzanne Pollak and Lee Manigault (aka the Deans), the Charleston Academy of Domestic Pursuits already has a cult following in Charleston. Now, with the launch the Academy’s eponymous book, the Deans dispense their secrets for those who cannot score a spot at one of their notoriously fun and educational classes.

Chatelaine of the Miles Brewton House, Lee is renowned for her tireless preservation work, her wit and her opulent entertaining.

Born in Beirut, raised in Africa, Suzanne is the author of “Entertaining for Dummies” and “The Pat Conroy Cookbook”. A former spokesman for Federated Department Stores, she brings cosmopolitan flair to Rainbow Row.

See the Deans at the Library Society before they are launched on the national and international stage!
